Hi everyone. This week I want to focus more on the business side of my blog. That is, this post is about my progress so far.
I’ll admit that it’s been a while since I’ve started this blog and not actually said much about my business. I’ve just been doing little bits here and there as time permits. Now that I think about it, I’ve actually managed to get a fair bit done.
The first thing I had to do before I could get the ball rolling was come up with a business name. I’ll keep that secret for now until I’m ready to unveil the website, but needless to say I have come up with something.
Once I came up with the name, I was able to get an ABN. Turns out getting an ABN is surprisingly easy. I was worried the process would require a ridiculous amount of paperwork and toing and froing from different Government agencies to get different documentation. Nope. I just needed my personal details (including tax file number) and then just selected the appropriate options for my business (for example sole trader and the industry). Once I had my ABN, I was then given the option of registering a business name. Again this process was pretty easy. About a week later, I then received a letter in the mail with my ABN and registered business name. Woo!
Now that I’m a registered business, I just needed to get a domain. I wanted a .com.au domain rather than just a .com one. Personally I feel that an Australian business with a .com.au domain comes across as more professional. I have no real reason to think that to be honest. Anyway, in order to get a .com.au domain I needed an ABN. The process itself was also straight forward. If I didn’t already have a host in mind, that part would have been the hardest because there are so many options out there.
I’ve met with a local bank and set up some business accounts so I can now keep transactions separate and easier to keep track of when it comes to tax time.
Tonight I’ve organised to get some logo drafts made. I’m going through Vista Print which has a crowd sourcing option. I was trying to come up with something myself, but it turns out my imagination only goes so far as my business name…
Next week I want to organise a PO Box address with Australia Post. According to their website, it’s as simple as going in store, filling out a form, and handing over some ID. Then pay and bam! PO Boxed.
Once I have a logo I just need to redo my website. I’ve been working on content for it, and I’ve been looking at templates. Once I have everything finalized I’ll be unveiling everything here.
And then I’m looking into business cards, etc.
Of course, that’s not everything I need to do, just what I’ll be doing within the next few weeks. There’s a lot of other stuff floating around in my head which I’ve got to pin down, but I think it can wait for a little while until everything else is out of the way.
